Tony letdowns
I was pretty disappointed with the Tony outcomes this year. Overall I guess it was fine, but there were three things that really upset me:
1) Obviously, I was very upset that The Drowsy Chaperone didn't win Best Musical. It was completely robbed. I'm sure Jersey Boys is great and a lot of fun, but there's no way a jukebox musical should win over an original musical. This one's going to take me a while to get over.
2) I was horrified that Jim Dale didn't win Best Featured Actor in a Musical. The ONLY other person that could have won and I would have felt okay was Manoel Felciano from Sweeney Todd, but really Jim Dale just needed to win.
3) You know I loved The Pajama Game, I really did. But it is not in the same league as Sweeney Todd; not even close. I am appalled that they gave Best Revival to PJ Game over this magnificent and revolutionary production of Sweeney Todd. It's maddening.
4) I know I said three, but I just had to end by saying that although I was pretty sure John Lloyd Young would win Best Actor in a Musical so it wasn't a surprise, you and I both know that it should have been Michael Cerveris.

Amen. I haven't seen the PJ Game or The Drowsy Chaperone, but I certainly wholeheartedly agree with your #3. But at least I learned that T.R. Knight from Grey's Anatomy is not only adorable but a Broadway actor as well, I didn't know that before...
I thought: how ridiculous that you have this whole number centered around this man who is barely dancing. Every ensemble member is dancing the pants off of him. I have a small pet peeve about putting a big name into a show when you could find plenty of people who can sing, dance, and act the part better. Harry may be charming to some, but compared with Kelli O'Hara he sounded like he had marbles in his mouth, he's not the best actor, and obviously not the best dancer. But the ensemble was great. And Harry can at least play the piano incredibly.
My reactions (even though I have seen NONE of the shows):
1--poor choice of numbers for Sweeny Todd and PJ Game--I was unmoved
2--Drowsy Chaparone definitly looked great
3--based on the number, I would love to see 3 Penny Opera
4--Why would Jersey Boys win ANYTHING?
the Commonwealth is taking over
5--while The Color Purple clearly gets no respect on Broadway, I would still be interested in seeing it
6--I really can't believe The Wedding Singer was nominated
Catherine, I completely agree with you!
Emily, I can't believe you were unmoved by the PJ Game songs!
There is definitely something fishy about Jersey Boys winning so much. But I still want to see it. I'm also more interested to see The Color Purple than I was before.
I don't want to incur wrath or anything, but I've got to say that I wasn't all too impressed with the PJ Game number. Nor the Drowsy Chaperone number which I was very surprised by! That's the number I had been looking forward to the most. I thought I'd be laughing and laughing, but really I just thought it was boring as soon as the narrator stopped talking. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt that the other numbers/scenes are more entertaining. And I agree with Emily about the Threepenny Opera, that looked very interesting. As for the Color Purple, I definitely do not want to see if after that Hell No number which irritated me (why couldn't we hear a song from the Tony winner?) and the brand-spanking new pastel costumes which did not seem to reflect the story of the show. I know it's a musical, but please, those characters go through some rough times.
But I loved the Sweeney number. I wish I could see that show again.
